KIT WADE
Born in Yorkshire
Kit trained as an art teacher in the late 6o's. She then worked in Yorkshire, Essex and Bedfordshire before retraining to teach Craft, Design and Technology. She subsequently worked in Leicestershire, then in Northumberland and Derbyshire She always continued her artwork alongside her teaching using a room of her home as studio space wherever she has lived.
Before moving to Norfolk in 2004, Kit spent ten years in the picturesque fishing village of Staithes in North Yorkshire. Here she and her husband, Bill Hansell, set up and ran 'Staithes Painting Holidays' for several years .
Kit is primarily a painter, who also enjoys working in textiles, jewellery and more recently, glass. Her principal elements are colour and pattern and her paintings are often about landscape and sense of place. She starts from observation and a personal response to real things and places but becomes more concerned with colours and surface as the work develops. She also works on the theme of 'still-life', sometimes treating her landscapes as a still-life. Although Kit does work outside, she prefers to work privately in her studio in the warm and dry, rather than as an object of curiosity in the wind and the wet! She uses both sketchbook and digital camera to record places and circumstances that interest her.
Her sources for work over the last 40 years have been diverse, but there are recurring themes of boats and harbours of the East Coast, trees and horizons and the looking down at things, whether the things are boats, beaches or bowls of fruit!
Kit has exhibited her work in the Midlands, Yorkshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Norfolk. She has work in private collections in New York, Toronto, Hong Kong, Dubai, Malaga, London, North and West Yorkshire, Huntingdonshire, Surrey, Suffolk, Buckinghamshire and Tyneside.
She takes part in the Norfolk Open Studios scheme.
